Driving an electric vehicle safely

You might not have thought about it yet, but driving an electric vehicle is truly a different experience compared to a conventional car. The technology, the driving feel, even the sensation on the road, everything is new. And while it can be an exciting change, it also requires some adjustment.

On average, it takes about eight months to fully adapt to the driving experience of an electric car. That might sound like a long time, but it’s perfectly normal. Electric driving simply works differently. So, take the time you need to adjust and be especially careful in the beginning.

Rapid acceleration that can surprise you

Electric cars accelerate much faster than you might be used to. The powerful push from a standstill can catch you off guard, particularly in heavy traffic. You may not even realise how quickly you’re picking up speed, so extra caution when setting off is essential.

A deceptive silence

One of the biggest differences with a combustion engine vehicle is the sound or rather, the lack of it. Electric motors are almost silent, making the ride more comfortable, but also more deceptive. Without engine noise, it’s easier to lose track of your speed.
In busy urban areas, this can be dangerous, especially for pedestrians and cyclists who might not hear you approaching. Stay alert, even at lower speeds.

Getting used to regenerative braking

Many electric vehicles feature regenerative braking, which allows the motor to recover energy when you release the accelerator. It feels different from traditional braking and can seem unusual at first. With a bit of practice, it quickly becomes second nature and can even improve driving efficiency.

More weight, more pressure on the tires

Because of their battery packs, electric cars are heavier than conventional models. This extra weight puts additional strain on the tires, especially when combined with quick acceleration. Regular tire pressure checks and timely maintenance are therefore even more important to ensure safety and performance.

Driving an electric vehicle safely takes a short period of adaptation, but it’s an investment in your comfort and safety. Once you get used to the technology and driving style, you’ll likely never want to go back to a traditional car.
