An electric car doesn’t need maintenance. Or does it?

Electric cars are known for their low maintenance costs. No more changing engine oil, replacing spark plugs, or checking the exhaust. This makes driving electric not only more sustainable but also simpler. Yet that doesn’t mean maintenance is unnecessary. On the contrary: with the right care, your EV will stay in top shape for longer and you’ll drive more safely.

The battery: the heart of your car

In a traditional car, the engine takes centre stage. In an EV, it’s the battery. This is by far the most important component. Proper maintenance and smart charging habits significantly extend its lifespan.

  • Avoid fully discharging the battery.
  • Prefer charging up to around 80% instead of always going to 100%.

This is called a healthy charging cycle. It may seem like a small adjustment, but it makes a big difference for your battery’s longevity.

Fewer moving parts, but still points of attention

One of the biggest advantages of driving electric is the fact that there are far fewer moving parts. No timing belt, no spark plugs, no engine oil. That saves a lot in maintenance.

Still, there are a few areas where extra attention is required:

  • Tires

EVs are heavier than traditional cars, which causes extra wear on the tires. Regularly check tire pressure and replace them on time to stay safe and efficient on the road.

  • Brakes

Electric cars use regenerative braking, which reduces brake wear. But that doesn’t mean they don’t need maintenance. Have them checked regularly to make sure they remain in optimal condition.

  • Fluids

You’ll still find a few fluids in an EV:
– coolant for the battery
– windshield washer fluid
– brake fluid

These need to be checked and topped up regularly, just like in a traditional car.

Simpler, but not carefree

An electric car requires less maintenance, but that maintenance remains essential. By paying attention to the battery, tires, brakes, and fluids, you’ll enjoy your car for longer and drive electric with peace of mind.
With a bit of discipline and regular checks, your EV will stay safe, efficient, and reliable on the road.
